About me
Technology has always been personal

A few things about me

I'm a proud dad of two and a firm believer in quality over quantity. I appreciate good design, craftsmanship and things that have been made with care.

Away from work, you'll usually find me listening to anything from the Rolling Stones to B.B. King and Buddy Guy, or thinking about the next ski or scuba trip.

I'm also rather fond of classic cars. Given the choice, I'd take a 1964 Ferrari 250 GTO over almost anything built today.

I'm fairly straightforward by nature. I say what I mean, I listen, and I value the same in the people I work with.

Where it all began

My interest in technology started in the early 1980s with a Texas Instruments TI-99/4A.

I persuaded my dad that I needed a computer for "homework". In reality, I was fascinated by games and wanted to understand how they worked.

There wasn't an internet full of answers, tutorials or Stack Overflow. You experimented, broke things, worked things out and tried again.

That curiosity never really went away.

From curiosity to a career

The TI-99/4A was followed by the Commodore 64 and Amiga, and eventually by formal study in computer programming.

What stayed with me wasn't any particular language or technology. It was learning how to break a problem down, understand how things work and find a practical way forward.

Those principles have proved considerably more durable than any programming language I've used since.

More than 20 years in digital

Since then, I've worked across ecommerce, financial services, automotive, media and other industries, for organisations ranging from growing businesses to global brands.

I've worked as a developer, technical lead and consultant, building products myself and working as part of multidisciplinary teams.

Technology has changed enormously. The fundamentals of delivering good work haven't.

And today...

I still enjoy getting into the detail, but these days I'm as interested in the business problem as I am in the technology used to solve it.

That means asking why before how, challenging assumptions when necessary, and finding solutions that are appropriate for the people who actually have to use and maintain them.

I work best alongside clients rather than at arm's length, bringing together technical experience, commercial thinking and a practical approach to delivery.

If you've got a digital problem worth solving, I'd be happy to hear about it.
